As I already posted yesterday, Actiontastic hit with the latest version tagged “beta”, namely 0.9.2. According to the release announcement, this would be the last one before the first official 1.0 version. That 1.0 version will have, if the developer knows what he says, a very interesting sync feature with Actionatr, the online sibling of Actiontastic, and we will have to wait no more than several weeks to see that happening.
Back to the 0.9.2 release, there is a very interesting feature – although a little complicated, but still interesting – related to the email processing. Packed with the release there is a small script called toICalInbox, which you can place everywhere on your system. Then you enter a rule in your Mail.app, in which you basically route all the messages that have “todo:” in the subject to this script. The routed message will then be forwarded by the script in the iCal @inbox calendar, from where Actiontastic will be able to pick it up on the next sync with iCal. Seems a little complicated, but still useful. You can actually send emails to you from anywhere and you know that those messages will end up in the GTD system once you fire your mail application, without any further processing. And, in my opinion, that’s cool. Automate as much as you can.
The Quicksilver plugin has some goodies, as expected, and these are basically related to the way you add info to your system. Here are some conventions:
“>” in the text will separate the content form the project name
“@context” will designate the context in which the info will be filed
Here is the original Quicksilver text:

And here is how it looks in the Actiontastic Project view:
Of course, it took less than 1 tenth of a second to actually forward the info from one app to the other.
I was somehow reluctant to the “mean, lean and clean” approach of apps like What ToDo and Actiontastic, but following the latest developments I guess I have to think more about it… The main drawbacks were always the lack of nested projects and the need for a “Someday/Maybe” and “Reference” system. I think Actiontastic does a great job on the surface, but below there is much more to be done. I can either chose other apps to do those someday/maybe and reference parts of my GTD system, or I can wait to see if the developer is following the same path…
Anyway, the latest version of Actiontastic surely deserve a try and even if I think it’s too thin for me, you can find it the app of your dreams
