Great post! I was looking for something that would help me take note of the gazillion ideas I have each day and I keep losing track of… So I thought something like “I should write a program and call it ‘idea incubator’”, then I thought of searching for this term on google and this post came up.

I always find myself in a situation where I’m simple thinking about stuff, and I get an idea, or more like a well constructed curious thought . The only problem with i is that by the time I get to write it down, recorde it or whatever means of capturing it, I’ve lost 40% on average of it’s worth, it’s punch and for some reason, can’t really get back to that place where I can genuinely reproduce it. A mind recorder would be nice…guess we’l have to wait some time until then.

I love your systematized approach Dragos. I like journals, so I keep a journal in every purse I have for capturing ideas. Nothing beats a walk-through of someone else’s system to help spark ideas for re-jigging our own. My own system is still, shall we say, “in flux” – though since I integrated quick post-It notes (like Greg, above) for quick recording of brief ideas, usually ones I know I’ll need to act on within a few hours, that’s streamlined things considerably. Drafting the post titles when you empty the boxes is a brilliant idea to keep organized and on topic – Thanks very much, Dragos!

I do have one suggestion for you, in trade for all your ideas…
You mention the laborious typing up of your voice-recorded notes, and I’m wondering if you’ve tried Dragon Dictation, a free iPhone/iPad/iPod Touch app from Nuance? Just thinking it might be helpful, since you’re dictating anyway, to go right to voice recognition instead of typing later.

Hi Dragos,

I completely agree that ideas for blog posts can come at any time!

I have always written down my ideas in a notebook. If I am near my notebook, I try to write the idea down immediately. I have had similar experiences of forgetting a really good idea and then trying to remember it.

If I am away from my notebook, I have written notes to myself on my memo pad on my cell phone. And I have also written ideas down on Post It notes.

‘Open my eyes and let me see’, thank you for sharing these great tips from your blogging experiences. I’m using a PC and a smartphone (not an Iphone) but I can certainly adapt your strategy for my own use.
