Dragos --

Good overview. I don't have an iPhone, but I do have an iPod Touch, which shares some of the same features. Useful things to know.

@nutuba well, I wish I could have signed that affiliate deal with Apple that Steve proposed to me several months ago. After this post, with iPhone sales boosting, I will certainly be rich :-)

Joking, of course :-) Maybe you could take one for Aunt Ruth, who knows?

My friend, you make some very compelling arguments in favor of the iPhone. I'm impressed. Perhaps there will be one in my future!

Oh, I've been a long time Apple hater, but then I got a MacBook, which I hated in the beginning, then I got an iPhone, which I also hated in the beginning. After I got used to them, I can say I totally love them. The iPhone is indeed an excellent travel mate, but more than that, it's *the* best Swiss army knife that once you got used to, you'll never want to go anywhere without!

Some travel-related apps I really love (added non-travel related in a comment to your post about your top apps):

Siphon - I make a lot of international calls. Therefore I'm using a VOIP account ( from justvoip.com) to keep the costs very low. What's cool about Siphon, is that it provides an interface similar to the normal phone, but whenever you make a call it goes through your VOIP account, which is MUUCH cheaper than a real call. Ah, you need to be connected to a wireless network to do that, but I guess that's not a problem, since you can find free wifi everywhere these days. One mention though - you won;t find this app on AppStore. You need to install it from Cydia, which means you need to jailbreak the iPhone first.

Planets - a little app that gives some useful information about planets, based on your time and location. I'm not into astronomy, but sometimes I'm curious when the sun will rise / set. It also has an awesome picture showing the day / night on earth at the current time.

And if we are talking about traveling, there's tons of dictionaries available for the iPhone. I use KTDict C-E (for Chinese) every day! It really changed the way I'm learning Chinese, since I can input Chinese characters by just drawing them with my finger, so I can look them up instantly even if I don't know how to read them! For Japanese there is Kotoba, also a really good dictionary.

@ibz’s last blog post..ibz: Too bad I don't like Beethoven. Gould couldn't save the thing as much as Beethoven destroyed it. :)

That is the company I use ! lol
I know it would be an investment when traveling that is why I looked in to it for us.

@Marius thanks for the comment, mate, and good luck with replacing that broken screen. Or even better, replace the whole thing and buy a new one :-)

@BunnygotBlog I guess a 3g iPhone starts at 199 USD but it's tied up to an AT&T plan, so you might check if you're in a good relationship with AT&T first. It's an investment not a gadget, it really pays off.

@Jonathan glad I made your attention shift a little. It's your call to buy and I'm not affiliated with them, but chances that you will find value in this are slightly bigger than for other similar devices.
