I'm from NZ, and what you said about Auckland really suprised me!
Compared to overseas I guess Auckland may be small and unpolluted, but compared to the rest of NZ it is a lot more fast paced, extremely polluted (When I go there my asthma flares up, and my skin and hair get really greasy), the beaches are gross compared to the rest of NZ, and the traffic and overpopulation is too much!
I like Auckland a lot for the shopping and because of family there, but it doesn't give NZ justice!!
If you ever come back, you should check out Nelson and Golden bay - that's where I'm from and it's just beautiful beaches, loads of art, and a really relaxed atmosphere. I think you'll have better luck with your raw food diet around there too. The South Island is quite a bit different to the North, it has more (and in my opinion, better) scenery, however it is much less culturally diverse.
If can't make it to the South Island, at least go to the Bay of Islands, Mt Manganui in Tauranga, or Gisborne! Those are all lovely, relaxed, outdoorsy places that much better represent our lifestyle :)
